Ribera del Duero wine

The Ribera del Duero DO is located in the Duero River basin, in the southeast of Castilla and Leon. The vineyards are 115 km and 35 km wide, spanning 100 towns on the banks of the river in 4 provinces: Soria, Segovia, Burgos and Valladolid. The denomination of origin was created in 1982, when large wineries and brands got together to create a great wine region, betting on the replanting of vineyards and on technology to make the wines.

More than 240 wineries and 8,000 vine growers make up the Ribera del Duero at present. The soil in this DO is composed of chalk and limestone, making it almost infertile, and there is a continental climate, with plenty of sunshine and little rainfall.

Its more than 20,700 hectares of vines represent 20% of the total wine production in Spain. The Tempranillo is the main grape of the area , present in more than 75% of wines from Ribera del Duero. It allows wine producers to make young wines, as well as others to age in barrels. Furthermore, the strains that stand out are Albillo, for white grapes, and for red grapes: Tinta del País (Tempranillo), Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Garnacha Tinta.
